Let's see... the biggest, tallest tour boat in Cabo? Check. Three levels from which to take in views? Check. Open bar with live music up top? Check. Fantastic dinner menu including filet mignon, shrimp, sea bass, even lobster? Check. A live performance by a Mexican and Argentinean show troupe? Check. I think this just might be one of the best things to do in Cabo. If you haven't yet hopped aboard the Cabo Rey you're missing out!
The easiest way to book a tour aboard the Cabo Rey is with a quick visit to their website. Sign up on their site and you'll get an automatic 10% discount. They offer 4 different tours; a daytime Snorkeling Tour, a Whale Watching tour, the Sunset Mexican Dinner and the Sunset Premier Dinner & Show. That's the one we opt for most trips as you get a choice from about 10 wonderful entrees plus dessert with table service. The Sunset Mexican Dinner is quite nice as well, just a step down from the Premier as it includes a self-serve buffet, no table service or menu to order from and no dinner show.
After boarding you'll head up to the upper deck for open-bar limitless cocktails. Now's a good time to find a great spot along the starboard side of the boat to best take in the incredible views of the rugged coastline heading towards Land's End and the famous Arch (Los Arcos). You'll be listening to some great music courtesy of a live band and sipping on drinks but make sure to have that camera ready, there's never a shortage of fantastic shots to be had. The unique 3 level design of the Cabo Rey provides camera angles and perspectives you simply don't get on other boat tours. Take advantage of that.
All of Cabo Rey's tours will take you by Land's End and the Arch as well as a cruise down Medano Beach but the dinner cruises take you around the corner of Land's End and up the Pacific side of the Cape. That extra leg will bring you some awesome scenery, from the towering cliffs of the Pedregal, Divorce Beach and then into what has to be some of the most spectacular sunsets on the planet.
When you book the Sunset Premier Dinner Tour you'll be served a sit down dinner that is much more than one might expect. The surroundings are quite elegant. There is no shortage of windows to take in views. And, you'll have a great seat for the truly amazing floorshow that a troupe of Mexican and Argentinian performers stage.
Menu options on the Premier are no slouch, either. You can choose from 10 different entrees including: Chautebriand, Cabo Rey Shrimp (jumbo served with a white wine and cream sauce), Sea Bass, Stuffed Chicken Breast, Vegeterian Lasagna, Shrimp Fettucini or select from a choice of combo plates like Beef and Shrimp. Dinner is 3 courses starting with a salad and ending with a dessert flight. There are kids menu options as well.
After dinner the show starts. We've been several times and each time the show is different so it's like a new experience. Dancers perform a variety of culturally significant numbers and there may even be a bit of fire involved in some of the work done. One of our favorites is the gaucho performance with boleadores (ropes with weights on the ends). The gaucho spins these in a frenzy striking the ground creating a rythymic swell of activity. The heavy weights come within fractions of an inch of striking the gaucho but it never does. Heck, we've even see the gaucho knocking a cigarette out of the mouth of a willing audience member – the accuracy is something to behold.
It's not hard to see why we think the Cabo Rey is one of the "can't miss" things to do in Los Cabos and we hope you take our advice and book a tour on your next visit. Look out for occasional specials they run on their website when you do. Saving a few bucks always helps.
